Leaders and Lunch: Tackling the Loneliness Epidemic
Wednesday, June 18, 2025 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM)
(EDT)
Description
In this Leaders & Lunch session we will explore loneliness as a growing public health crisis—and what leaders can do to foster connection in our workplaces and communities. Don’t miss this timely and important conversation! We encourage participants to read this book, Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World, by Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, available at Bookmarks, our local non-profit bookstore. This will help frame our conversation and shared time during the upcoming discussion. Former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy argues that loneliness is a hidden public‑health crisis driving addiction, depression, violence, workplace malaise, and social polarization. Because humans are wired for connection, rebuilding community is also the cure. Murthy weaves research, policy insights, and personal stories to show why belonging matters and how we can reclaim it. He offers four immediately actionable habits: 1. Daily reach‑outs: Spend at least 15 focused minutes with people you love. 2. Undivided attention: When together, single‑task—listen, make eye contact, be fully present. 3. Intentional solitude: Strengthen self‑connection through meditation, creativity, or time outdoors; it makes outward bonds richer. 4. Service: Small acts of help—from checking on a neighbor to sharing a smile—reinforce mutual purpose. Murthy’s core message: we thrive when we turn toward one another. Practiced individually and nationally, these habits can prevent a “social recession” and build a healthier, more united society.
This Leaders & Lunch session will begin at noon and conclude at 1:00 PM. Note that this is a webinar format, so cameras and mics will be on only for the hosts and guest speakers. If you have any questions for our panelists, you will be able to enter them using the Q&A function.
